Be seen. The Kuat NV 2.0 is a larger sibling of the Sherpa 2.0. At only 63 pounds, the SuperClamp is one of the lightest four-bike tray racks available, so it’s easier to get on and off of the vehicle than its competitors. Also, it holds bikes up to only 40 pounds each, which is similar to what most hanging-style hitch racks support, but it’s less than what most other two-bike tray racks we tested support (many of them can hold two 60-pound bikes). Multiple Car Rack models available with Fast Shipping and 12-month hassle-free returns. Folding the Bones is easy, and the curved arms and legs collapse until the rack is nearly flat. The integrated cable locks also allow you to secure bikes to the rack. Get roof, trunk or hitch mounted racks from Thule, SportRack and CCM. As long as your vehicle has a trailer hitch, this lightweight model is one of the easiest to mount on your vehicle and is simple to load bikes onto. We liked its wide, solid stance, and minor design touches that made it especially easy to use. A: No. Then you slide it back onto the toothed section and tighten the knob. And you have to make sure that the wheel clamp is extra-tight. This is a great option for up to four bikes, and many are lockable too.Whether you need something lightweight to carry one bike or something more solid to carry a family of bikes, Thule and Saris make great racks. Overall, we liked the four-bike version of the Yakima RidgeBack. A potential drawback for some cyclists: The Sherpa 2.0 can’t expand to hold more than two bikes (although nearly 70 percent of our survey respondents told us they carry only up to two bikes). Its ultralight, 20-pound weight and compact dimensions make it easy to mount, although you do have to cinch a bolt down through the hitch to secure it (Kuat includes a 19 mm wrench for the job). They usually work by removing a clip or a pin. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. The Bones also garnered one of the highest ratings from bike owners in a survey we fielded to more than 20 bike clubs across the country. Overall, we found it to be well made and easy to use, but it’s a little awkward to have to climb over (and possibly lift your bike over) the closed tailgate. It uses two wheel hoops to hold a bike up to 60 pounds, which makes it very easy to load and unload, but it didn’t hold our bikes securely when they had a front or rear rack. The RidgeBack also lacks a built-in lock, which is something we expect to find in this price range. It’s also easier than most to secure in the hitch, and its low lift height makes mounting bikes easier. Photo: Rik Paul. A handle on top makes it easy to install this rack in the hitch receiver and to remove it. Flip a tab and adjust the tension, and the rack grips any type of roof rails firmly. We loaded bikes, noting how high we had to lift them and how easily they could be secured on the rack. When you’re adjusting the arms, you have to be careful not to loosen the knob that holds the legs to the center tube all the way, or the nut on the other end of its screw will fall to the ground. If you don’t mind removing your bike’s front wheel, the Thule Bed Rider may work for you, especially if you have a smaller pickup bed. Much like the Thule Raceway Pro, the Thule Gateway 2 is a high-quality trunk rack with a solid build. The 1UP USA Quik Rack Single is a beautifully crafted rack that holds a bike up to 50 pounds, and it can be expanded to carry two or three bikes with add-on extensions. Swapping out the fork skewer mount for a thru-axle is pretty easy, and this rack has a cutout for a disc brake caliper. Trunk racks of all kinds have one unavoidable flaw: They make contact with the finish on your car, and over time the contact points are likely to cause scratches. Photo: Rik Paul, With most hanging hitch racks, you have to unload the bikes before you can access a vehicle’s rear compartment. If you already own a roof rack, a roof bike rack could be the simplest solution, however a boot or hitch mounted carrier is often easier to load and unload and suits heavier bikes, even e-bikes. Of the pickup-bed carriers we’ve tested (none of which need to be bolted to the truck), it provides the best balance of compactness, ease of use, and affordable price. All of the bikes need to nest against one another, with the front wheels turned in the same direction. And as with any hanging-style rack, you may need an optional bar, such as the Kuat Ubar, to mount a bike with a step-through or other frame without a horizontal top tube. Whether you need to transport heavier bikes, such as electric models, or you just want a rack that’s easy to load and store, the Thule EasyFold XT 2 is hard to beat. The Talon is easy to attach and remove, and it was very stable and secure while we were driving. $64.99. It held our bikes securely during our test drives and was easy enough to mount on the vehicle (but not quite as easy as the SwitchHitter). If your car didn’t come with them, you can buy them from Thule or Yakima (this also gives you the option of carrying other gear, from skis to canoes to a cargo carrier). But instead of swinging to the side, it extends rearward in a smooth, easy motion, which makes it easier to use. The release handle for tilting the rack is less accessible, too. There's a problem loading this menu right now. This rack doesn’t come with locks, but Kuat sells a separate cable lock for it. But that’s about all it has going for it. It’s not as easy to use overall, though. This makes it a little lighter and less expensive, while also being solid and feature-laden. The Sprint XT was also easy to mount on our vehicle, requiring no assembly. And even with only three aluminum bikes mounted on the rack, it sagged enough that we had to lift all the bikes and the swung-open rack to get it back into place. The Thule UpRide Universal Bike Rack is an ingenious, lightweight roof rack for your bicycle that sets up in minutes and is a safe for your car as it is for your bike. *At the time of publishing, the price was $780. This lightweight model is easier to mount on your car and to stow away than most other tray racks. We previously recommended the Allen Sports Deluxe 2-Bike rack, and we still think it’s a good choice for people who want to spend less than $50. Rear mounted racks are one of the most efficient bike racks available, as they fit to your car with a set of straps and don’t require an additional mount. It’s great for electric bikes, but it is quite a bit more expensive than our top pick. Rik Paul, who has tested tray-style hitch racks and trunk racks, is Wirecutter’s autos editor, and he has edited this guide since its beginning. And the straps that secure the bikes are the easiest to use of any hanging-style hitch rack we tested: You just set the bike in the cradle, pull the straps over the top tube, and cinch them down. If you already own a roof rack, a roof bike rack could be the simplest solution, however a boot or hitch mounted carrier is often easier to load and unload and suits heavier bikes, even e-bikes. Leader of the Hitch Bike Racks for over 50 years. Both procedures are easy to do, and they work well. The Sherpa 2.0 also has one of the lowest lift heights—only 26½ inches, compared with 29 inches or more for most other tray racks (and even higher for other types of racks), so you don’t have to strain to load your bikes. Also, on the road the HighSpeed didn’t hold our bikes as solidly as some other racks did. It is important to note that a Rooftop Car Bike Rack will add substantial height to your car and care must be taken when travelling under low clearance bridges, supports and car parks. The Saris Bones Hitch 2-Bike is basically a hanger-style hitch version of the company’s Bones trunk rack, and it’s one of the lowest-priced hitch racks we’ve tested. The two-bike Yakima Dr.Tray is fairly lightweight (41 pounds). This means there’s a risk that you’ll forget your bike is on the roof while you’re entering a garage or pulling up to a fast-food drive-through window—as one Wirecutter editor who shall not be named can attest. The Bones’s arms are made of injection-molded plastic, which makes the rack lighter than competitive aluminum racks we tested. Northrock Bikes Presents - A closer look at the ways you can transport your bike using various styles of vehicle bike rack systems. And for style-conscious riders, the Sherpa 2.0 looks great, with its metallic powder-coat finish and anodized accents. And though the rack held the bikes securely, they wiggled from side to side more than on the other racks due to less-rigid clamping arms. It’s lightweight, holds one or two bikes securely, and lets you access your vehicle even when the rack is loaded. (Also keep in mind that all roof racks, when loaded, effectively raise the height of your vehicle by several feet. The rear-mounted bike rack is most people’s first experience of transporting multiple bicycles with their car, and as a cost-effective option it is hard to beat. Although the Sherpa 2.0 is more expensive than other types of racks, its price is about average among our test group of tray racks. The ProRide was the only rack, however, that wouldn’t clamp around big, modern aero crossbars. Same Day delivery 7 days a week £3.95, or fast store collection. Of the tray-style hitch racks we tested, this is one of the easiest to install and use. If you’re on a budget, want to carry two bikes, and don’t mind giving up some of the convenience of the Kuat Sherpa 2.0, we recommend the Kuat Beta, a hanging-style hitch rack. and 2 in. (It’s also available in three-bike and four-bike versions.) Buy Now. But the Beta is solidly constructed and holds bikes securely, and it’s one of the lightest hitch racks we’ve tested, at only 18 pounds, which makes it easy to install on or take off a vehicle. For each update to this guide, we’ve also performed a thorough scan of the latest models available from all of the major manufacturers, selecting the most promising for hands-on evaluations. The Beta doesn’t hold bikes quite as solidly as the Sherpa 2.0 does—during our test drives, the bikes swung a little more on the rack’s arms, but we never worried that they’d come loose. Unlike some other carriers we tried, it doesn’t require you to remove the front wheel of a bike. Although the HoldUp tilts down, the rear door of our Toyota 4Runner still hit the handlebars of the front bike, preventing us from opening the door all the way. But the installation and adjustment process felt unnecessarily frustrating. Tray-style hitch racks are still easier to use overall, though. We also talked to experts at REI’s headquarters, and we surveyed more than 20 bike clubs across the country. If you want to carry your bike on the roof of your vehicle, you’ll find no easier way to do so than with the Yakima HighRoad. The Kuat NV Base 2.0 is essentially the same as the NV 2.0, but without the integrated work stand. (If the truck bed has secure tie-down loops, however, you can lock the bikes to the truck with a lock and cable.). They require no special fittings and detach easily from the vehicle when not needed. This process isn’t even as seamless as on some more expensive hanging hitch racks—you have to unclasp a wire retainer and remove a pin, rather than just using a one-step latch—but we didn’t find it difficult. Swing-away racks will swing the bikes completely away from the car, giving you unlimited access while the bikes remain on the rack. So it’s not suitable for carrying some specialty and electric bikes, but the vast majority of modern bikes come in well under that weight limit. Types of Bike Racks. Of the roof racks we tested, the Yakima HighRoad was the easiest to work with—both when mounting it on the vehicle and when loading bikes. The SeaSucker Talon is a unique fork-mount rack that attaches to the roof of most vehicles with heavy-duty vacuum mounts (large suction cups). It’s available for 1¼-inch and 2-inch hitch receivers. Some racks carry bikes by the handle bars – without contacting the frame, fork, cable or hydraulic lines. Weighing only 9 pounds, the Bones is one of the lightest trunk racks we tested, which made getting it onto the back of a vehicle easy. The Bones’s center leg extends upward onto the trunk or hatch, and the other two extend down to sit on or against the car’s bumper. Be sure to measure your bed and bike before buying. It can also tilt down so you are able to access a vehicle’s rear cargo compartment, but this is more of a hassle than with a tray-style rack because you have to remove the bikes first. But it can’t tilt up when it’s empty or tilt down for access to a vehicle’s rear area. The Trio seems like it’s designed mainly for thru-axle bikes, and we found the process of switching to a fork skewer to be a bit tricky. The EasyFold holds bikes by the frame, rather than by the wheels, however, which some riders don’t prefer, and the clamps can be a little awkward to use. And it can accommodate bikes up to 60 pounds each in the two positions nearest to the car, and 35 pounds each in the two positions farthest from the car. The Kuat Transfer 2-Bike is a less expensive cousin of the Kuat Sherpa 2.0. Shop for car bike racks and carriers at Canadian Tire online; pick up at any of 500+ stores or ship to home. The Sherpa 2.0 has a beautiful finish, with a metallic powder-coated frame, and like most of the tray racks we tested, it comes with locking systems for securing the rack to the vehicle and the bikes to the rack. It’s the electric bicycle version of the well-reviewed Sport Rider SE2. Photo: Rik Paul, The ramp is stored in a compartment inside the rack. The SuperClamp EX is one of the lightest four-bike tray-style hitch racks available, and it can accommodate two bikes up to 60 pounds each, along with two others up to 35 pounds each. It’s easy to install, holds the bike securely without contacting the frame, and allows easy access to your car. Photo: Rik Paul, Bikes are held by padded clamps—with integrated locks—that grip the frame. There are two versions of the Velo Gripper. Although they’re more expensive than trunk racks and not as easy to use as hitch racks, roof racks give you unimpeded access to your vehicle’s rear compartment, and they’re the only option for some car designs. For security, the HighRoad has locking covers that prevent those tabs from being lifted, so thieves can’t remove the bike rack itself from the vehicle; some other models that use a similar latching system are not lockable. The Thule Apex Swing 4 holds four bikes and swings to the side to allow full access to a vehicle’s rear cargo compartment without you having to unload the bikes. But in our tests, this rack was more difficult to install and to adjust than most of its competitors. The types we tested included: After testing scores of racks, we’ve determined that a tray-style hitch rack is the easiest to use and the most versatile, but the vehicle (or vehicles) and bike (or bikes) you own may limit your choices: To understand the pros and cons of different types of racks, we talked with the experts at a number of top bike and bike-rack shops across the country, including Rack Attack stores in Boston, Minneapolis, and Portland, Oregon; East Burke Sports in East Burke, Vermont; Chile Pepper Bike Shop in Moab, Utah; Backcountry Bike & Ski in Palmer, Alaska; Roscoe Village Bikes in Chicago; and Ridgefield Bicycle Company in Fairfield County, Connecticut. The initial installation took a little longer than with other pickup racks we tried, because it took some measuring to get the grippers in the right place on the truck bed. This tray-style hitch rack is lighter than most similar models and is easy to use, and it’s reasonably priced for a four-bike rack. We recommend securing them with rubber bands or twist ties. Thule’s hitch-locking system makes this hitch rack simpler than most to secure: Just slide the rack into a 1¼-inch or 2-inch receiver, close a pinch arm into the receiver’s hole, turn the tension knob to cinch it down, and use a key to lock the knob. *At the time of publishing, the price was $220. The Hollywood HR1450Z-E is a premium choice for heavy e-bikes as this durable carrier lets you haul a whopping two 80 pounds e-bikes. The Thule Apex XT 4, which fits four bikes, is fairly light, holds bikes securely, and is quite easy to install. We’ve replaced the now-discontinued Kuat Highline with our previous trunk rack pick, the Saris Bones. These include the less expensive Kuat Beta, the Saris SuperClamp EX 4-Bike, and the e-bike-friendly Thule EasyFold XT 2, as well as the Saris Bones trunk rack, the Yakima HighRoad roof rack, and the Inno Velo Gripper pickup-bed carrier. We also found no way to lock the whole setup to the vehicle. But let’s face it, with any model it can be a struggle to get a really heavy mountain bike onto the roof of your car. During assembly, we noted whether the necessary tools were included and how easy the instructions were to follow (most directions needed improvement). Read on for the full list. One caveat with the Velo Gripper: Many of today’s pickups have relatively short, 5-foot or 5½-foot beds, which may not provide enough room for you to carry an adult-size bike with both wheels on—at least not without lowering the tailgate. Photo: Rik Paul. The Velo Gripper is available in two versions: The RT201 is designed to fit regular pickup-bed sides, and the RT202 is designed for use with C-channel bed-rail systems. At only 18 pounds, it’s also one of the lightest—though it’s the same weight as the Kuat Beta, which we like more. However, it swayed more than the Kuat Highline or the Saris Bones, likely due to a lack of side straps. Best car rack for heavy e-bikes: Hollywood HR1450Z-E. the Hercules among e-bike racks – carries 160 lbs, two bikes of 80 lbs each! The only complaints we had were related to the Thule’s hard-to-stretch bike straps and to the handle that releases the swing-away mechanism, which was smaller and harder to grip than those on other swing-away racks we tested. And it holds bikes securely by the front wheel, with minimal side-to-side movement and without contacting the frame. Despite it’s being a recent release, Kuat has since discontinued this model. The HighRoad secures a bike using two hoops that clamp securely onto the front wheel (as shown in the GIF above), as well as a ratcheting strap that wraps around the rear rim. Although it held our bikes just fine most of the time, while we were driving on a twisty road on a rainy day, the clamp gradually slid down the narrow tire of one bike, letting the bike fall over. And unlike most hitch racks, the Beta folds completely flat when it’s not on the car, making it simple to store anywhere—you can hang it on a garage wall hook or stash it in the back of an apartment closet. Adjusting the arms required simultaneously pulling on two tabs while moving the arms in place, a task that would be done most easily with three hands (in our case, two hands and a knee). Finally, the hook that holds the front wheel may not work if a bike has a front fender. The other trunk racks we tested required tightening each strap individually, which often resulted in a lopsided rack in need of adjustments. Buy Now. It wasn’t as easy to use as the latest designs, though, lacking a knob for securing the rack to the hitch receiver and the nifty pull-handle tilting system of the Pro XT and SuperClamp EX. Still, if you already own a 2-inch hitch rack and want the capability of swinging it 90 degrees to the side, the BackSwing is the better of the two we’ve tested. It was also more difficult to install. It was also notably harder to tilt the rack to access a vehicle’s rear and to fold up when empty. Learn more. Of the swing-away hanging-style hitch racks we tested, this was one of the lightest and easiest to use. Car Roof Bike Racks allow the whole bike to be mounted on the roof of your car. The release handle for tilting the rack up for storage or down for access presented the biggest problem. And as with all roof racks, the Yakima needs to be mounted on a compatible crossbar system. It wasn’t always easy to mount in our vehicles’ hitch receivers, though. The 2-inch hitch version will also accept an add-on extension for carrying a third bike. Thule's car bike racks come in different types and can be mounted on your roof, hitch, towbar, or on your boot. In our test drives, the Race Ready also didn’t hold the bikes as securely as the Yakima HighRoad and RockyMounts TomaHawk did. Then we removed the bikes and rack, and folded the rack (if possible) for storage. It secures the bike by the front wheel, avoiding any contact with the frame, and in our tests it held a variety of bikes solidly—even more so than some fork-mount roof racks, which bike enthusiasts often consider to be the most secure type. Also, the FullSwing fit so snugly into our vehicle’s hitch receiver that it was difficult to insert it while also supporting its weight. 4. This roof rack is another option if you don’t have a hitch mount. It doesn’t require any assembly, but we didn’t find it as easy to use as the Kuat Transfer. It wasn’t dangerous, just annoying. This makes it relatively easy to get the rack on and off the car. It fits 1¼-inch and 2-inch hitch receivers. The Glide EX is also available in 2-bike and 5-bike versions. The Thule Passage 2 securely held our bikes and wasn’t difficult to mount. We recommend the Saris SuperClamp EX 4-Bike if you need to carry three or four bikes (or ones that are heavier than the Sherpa 2.0 can hold). It’s basically a nylon-covered pad that wraps around a truck’s tailgate, and it lets you carry up to five bikes by extending the front wheels over the tailgate and securing the bikes’ diagonal down tubes with Velcro straps. It will accommodate most 20-29” wheel bikes with tires as much as 3 inches in diameter. He was previously the automotive editor for Consumer Reports and the senior feature editor for Motor Trend. But unlike other racks, it doesn’t fold flat against the back of the vehicle; it still extends rearward by its full length, so you may need to be mindful when backing up. Trunk and roof racks won’t work on a pickup, and you may want to keep the hitch free for towing. A nifty touch: The shipping box doubles as a platform for assembly. With Parallelogram Bike Racks you pull a switch to extend the entire rack away from the vehicle, allowing limited access to the back so you can open the rear door or hatch.
