Weighing only 9 pounds, the Bones is one of the lightest trunk racks we tested, which made getting it onto the back of a vehicle easy. It can also tilt down so you are able to access a vehicle’s rear cargo compartment, but this is more of a hassle than with a tray-style rack because you have to remove the bikes first. But it can’t tilt up when it’s empty or tilt down for access to a vehicle’s rear area. The Trio seems like it’s designed mainly for thru-axle bikes, and we found the process of switching to a fork skewer to be a bit tricky. The EasyFold holds bikes by the frame, rather than by the wheels, however, which some riders don’t prefer, and the clamps can be a little awkward to use. And it can accommodate bikes up to 60 pounds each in the two positions nearest to the car, and 35 pounds each in the two positions farthest from the car. We’ve replaced the now-discontinued Kuat Highline with our previous trunk rack pick, the Saris Bones. These include the less expensive Kuat Beta, the Saris SuperClamp EX 4-Bike, and the e-bike-friendly Thule EasyFold XT 2, as well as the Saris Bones trunk rack, the Yakima HighRoad roof rack, and the Inno Velo Gripper pickup-bed carrier. We also found no way to lock the whole setup to the vehicle. But let’s face it, with any model it can be a struggle to get a really heavy mountain bike onto the roof of your car. The HighRoad secures a bike using two hoops that clamp securely onto the front wheel (as shown in the GIF above), as well as a ratcheting strap that wraps around the rear rim. Although it held our bikes just fine most of the time, while we were driving on a twisty road on a rainy day, the clamp gradually slid down the narrow tire of one bike, letting the bike fall over. And unlike most hitch racks, the Beta folds completely flat when it’s not on the car, making it simple to store anywhere—you can hang it on a garage wall hook or stash it in the back of an apartment closet. Adjusting the arms required simultaneously pulling on two tabs while moving the arms in place, a task that would be done most easily with three hands (in our case, two hands and a knee). Still, if you already own a 2-inch hitch rack and want the capability of swinging it 90 degrees to the side, the BackSwing is the better of the two we’ve tested.
